You’ve had a hard day at work. Your energy levels have hit rock bottom. What are you going to do about cooking? Picking something up from a nearby convenience store, shopping at your favorite Japanese online store, or eating at a restaurant are all great options. But, what if you’re tired of the same old food and want something different?

One positive that’s come out of the pandemic is the massive growth in the food delivery industry, even in Japan. Keep reading if you want to find out which ones are the best.

Uber Eats

Uber Eats is a subsidiary of Uber and is a food delivery app that launched in 2016. Using the app you can get a delivery from restaurants in more than 1,000 cities worldwide.

In Japan, the brand partners with a selection of other chains including Burger King, McDonald’s, KFC, Mos Burger, and other local favorites including Yoshinoya.

The app is available in Japanese and English and is available for Android and iOS devices. One tip worth remembering before you use it is to have an international credit card set up for your account. You’ll have issues with payment processing if you haven’t got one.

In Tokyo, you can use the app from 7 am to 2 am across all areas of the city. The restaurant coverage is pretty good, but there are extra charges to pay. For example, there’s a surcharge to pay during busy times.

It’s also worth noting that the brand is cutting down on disposable items. Cutlery and single-use items such as straws no longer come as standard.

Demae-can

Using this Japanese food delivery service you can order from more than 2,000 restaurants across Japan. The app is aimed at people who want to order their food in Japanese, but it’s available in English as well.

There is also the option of ordering using Chinese characters which is perfect for non-Japanese speakers who might be studying at schools or universities where Chinese characters are used rather than kana or kanji.

FineDine

FineDine does exactly what it says on the tin. Use the app and you get quality dining at a relatively reasonable price.

One thing that sets it apart from many other food delivery apps is that its delivery people are directly employed by the company rather than freelancers.

The company has been around for a while, but the delivery area is relatively limited. It serves 12 wards in Tokyo.

FOOD-E Japan

Food-E Japan is a food delivery service based in Tokyo that was established in 2005. It delivers to more than 200 cities in Japan.

Food-E is a subsidiary of Seven & iHoldings Co Ltd which also operates the 7-Eleven chain of convenience stores across the country.

The service offers gourmet meals from higher-end restaurants, which makes it an ideal choice for an eat-in date night or some other special occasion.

FOOD-E is not about fast food. You could wait up to 90 minutes for your food to be delivered. If you want to order something special, you might pay to order it a day in advance.

Delivery is only by car or motorcycle which means it’ll be done as quickly as possible and the food will be kept hot for consumption.

As well as ordering food, you can also use the app to shop at the brand’s online store. You can purchase a range of items including grocery staples, beverages, and snacks. Compared to convenience stores and supermarkets, the prices are very reasonable.

Rakuten Gurunavi Delivery

The Rakuten Gurunavi Delivery app allows you to place orders at over 30,000 restaurants across Japan and have your food delivered. It is the second-largest food delivery service in Japan and has been around for more than a decade. You can order a wide range of food including Italian, Japanese, and Chinese.

Wolt

Wolt merged with DoorDash in 2022 to become one of the largest food delivery apps in the US. However, in Japan, you’ll be redirected to the Wolt app if you download the DoorDash app.

The Wolt app offers a smooth ordering experience and a large selection of restaurants have jumped on board. You can download the app and browse without creating an account but if you want to place a food order, you’ll need to register.

If the order you place with Wolt is over $10 your food order is delivered for free. You’ll find the app available in over 100 cities across Japan and you can place orders online or using your phone.

To make things easier for non-Japanese visitors, there is an English version of the website.

Menu

Menu is one of the most popular food delivery apps in Japan with over 10 million users and more than 2 million orders placed every day. The app is free to use and is available for iOS and Android users.
