Tough temporary, the Oculus Rift and Touch combo is facing a huge price drop – at $499. Individually, the price for Rift, the VR handset, is $499; and the same for Touch, the motion controller, is $99. This makes the devices in the combo drop at about $200. The price drop will be in the markets for the next six weeks.

This initiative by Oculus is its attempt to promote the Rift for this summer. As a matter of fact, it has been launched since over a year. Jason Rubin, the VP of Oculus, said that this sales offer is meant to draw the enthusiastic users, who are holding themselves back for the price. Rubin also said that this will draw the users that are yet to consider the Rift.

Rubin echoed his earlier statement that the present Rift edition is quite far from its lifespan ending. He went on saying that it is rather to provide enjoyment for the users than become an outdated device soon.  This is because “the hardware is not holding up VR adoption”, he continued. Oculus is presently at a stage regarding Rift, where the content suffices expectations, which led the company attack price.

Buyers of Rift will need a gaming computer for its usage, which does not come in a combo. Rubin says in regards that Oculus-approved PC price has been dropping gradually over the last year. This was fueled by Oculus coming up with lower minimum specification, which makes the PC priced at $650.

Oculus Rift can be worked with certain gaming laptops, appealing to users who are savvier with laptops than desktops. According to Rubin, the PC is quickly becoming rather a cost effective part of the VR equation. He continued, Oculus aims at keeping VR hardware be an affordable aspect for VR, while attacking price.
