LG Display and Sogang University together have developed the first ever AI-based content creation tech and measurement system. The team of Sogang University was led by professor Kang Seok-ju from Department of Electronics Engineering.
The creation and development of the technology addresses the inconvenience of the users of head-mounted displays in VR. the high immersion degree can bring dizziness and motion sickness. Also, higher display resolution means more computing is demanded from the head-mounted display to generate VR content, making things worse.
The main feature of the new tech is an algorithm to generate ultra-high resolution images from low-resolution images in real time. This conversion can be made possible by deep learning technology where external memory devices are not required.
The newly developed tech can boost power efficiency and can optimize the algorithm while realizing high resolutions on mobile devices. It helps in reducing system loads during display operation for VR.
That’s not all, as LG and Sogang have further plans. They agreed to collaborate in developing an instrument for measuring motion to photon latency and motion blurs in VR devices. This can be made possible by the industry-academy partnership, where they can apply a platform loaded with a precision motor (to simulate human neck movements) and an optical system.
This study by LG Display and Sogang University is quite meaningful in that this study developed a semiconductor which accelerates with low power realized through AI without an expensive GPU in a VR device. – Professor Kang Seok-ju, Department of Electronics Engineering, Sogang University.
He is involved in the study since 2015. Following the present fast-growing VR industry, market research firm IDC predicted that this market will go from 10 million units to 109 million units in 2021. Looks like the future updates of the progressive course can’t be missed!
