Samsung is coming up with the first cellular IoT mobile device that can keep track of multiple things. It is the Samsung Connect Tag, and it is the first consumer mobile product in the world that uses narrowband network technology (NB-IoT, Cat.M1).
This particular technology is an exclusively designed cellular communication standard and has the following abilities:
- Small data utilization.
- Low power consumption.
- Secure connection to the internet for optimal location services.
The Connect Tag provides small location notifications based on the narrowband network. This further leverages the entire internet service for identifying location info to increase security, and thus, your peace of mind.
The device is compatible working with GPS, WPS, and Cell ID. This lets the device for accurate retrieval of both outdoor and indoor location info with seamless tracking attributes. You can attach the device to your child’s backpack, your pet dog’s collar, and even the most valuable keys of your daily usage.
The Samsung Connect Tag will be ‘tied to the SmartThings ecosystem so that it can work conjunctively with your smart home appliances ‘through Works with SmartThings.’ Its geofence feature can notify the chosen smart devices as the user approaches those. This way, activities, like turning on the light or switching on your TV, can be triggered by the Connect Tag. This is possible right when the user enters a pre-defined zone. Similarly, you will be notified when your child enters the schoolyard or the dog jumps over the backyard fence.
Other functionalities of the cellular device include Send My Location and Periodic Location. The former lets you know during instances when you have to pick up your child after school is over. The latter gives you info on the trace of your loved ones’ locations.
Furthermore, there are key features for minimizing anxiety and increasing usability. The on-demand function will let you know the location of your car in a large parking lot, just by pressing a button on your smartphone.
As for hardware features, the Samsung Connect Tag has a compact size. It measures 3.21 cm wide, and 1.19 cm thick. Additionally, it has ‘IP68 water and is dustproof for durability. The battery lasts for 7 days after one single charge. Last but not the least, the device is available with a special ring, which can be used for easy attachment to bags, collars, and key rings.
The Connect Tag will be demonstrated at Samsung Developer Conference 2017. The event will be held on October 18-19, at Moscone Center, San Francisco. Initially, it will be available in the Korean markets and will receive further expansion in selective countries in the upcoming months.
