Audi is a German automobile manufacturer that designs, engineers, produces, markets, and distributes luxury vehicles worldwide. This company is already one of the world’s leading brands for automotive lighting technology which has come up with new solutions such as Matrix laser headlights that continue to drive progress.

According to the reports, Audi’s newly launched digital matrix LED headlights will be applied to mass-produced models for the first time. The sources say that the digital matrix LED headlights are one of the options for the 2021 e-Tron and e-Tron Sportback.

All-new Audi Matrix LED technology

The new Audi Matrix LED headlights are based on DMD technology, which stands for Digital Micro-mirror device. The heart of the device is a small chip with around one million micro mirrors, each of which has an edge length of only a few hundredths of a millimeter. Electrostatic fields allow the mirrors to be tilted at a rate of up to 5,000 times per second.

Each of the headlights consists of 1.3 million micro-reflectors. These headlights are the same as a movie projector, each micro-mirror can emit tiny and unique adaptive light particles to project images when the car is stopped or moving.

Besides that, the mirrors’ position determines what happens to the light generated by the three LEDs. A lens system directs the majority of the light onto the street; when a particular area should be dimmed, the necessary light is directed to an absorber that swallows it up.

According to Audi, when the vehicle is parked, the lighting technology provides 5 different welcomes to board or get off animations, each with unique dynamic graphics and text, which can be selected through the vehicle’s MMI touch screen. This kind of animation will surely enhance the magnificent appearance of the vehicle.

Additionally, the new digital lighting system offers features that make driving easier and more secure. The lane and orientation lighting for highways help the headlights to emit a carpet of light up to 50 meters long. Thus, it brightly illuminates the driver’s current lane and adjusts dynamically during lane changes.

Furthermore, Audi uses the low beam to create curve lighting, city lighting, and highway lighting functions. As a result of this, the main headlights can exclude other vehicles from the beam of light even more precisely, to avoid blinding them.

Audi has been always ahead of the other automobile manufacturers in terms of lighting technology. Their all-new digital matrix LED headlights will also go for mass production very soon according to an October 15 report.
