Channel 4 has launched its 4VR app on Oculus Rift to broadcast VR content. It is the broadcasting company’s efforts to secure its reputation while going beyond the mainstream.

The app will start with the company’s VR documentary on the Grenfell Tower Fire that took place on June 14, 2017. The incident took the lives of 72 people and is still affecting further lives.

Interviews with survivors, witnesses, and officials were filmed in 360 degrees for the documentary. It also contains computer animation of Grenfell Tower residents’ daily lives. Finally, it summarizes a detailed look at the losses of the disaster survivors.

Siobhan Sinnerton, the commissioning editor, said that innovation is the key for Channel 4, which drives them to explore and come across new and fascinating ways to deliver exclusive storytelling and journalism. He added on the VR documentary content: “We hope this piece will give our audience a truly unique perspective on what the Grenfell community was like before the fire.”

Among other contents are Kiss Me First, a drama that let VR create new worlds. It also shows how people can decline to dark paths if they cannot implement on their strengths to withstand the harsh realities of the world. This is a psychological show that the company has worked on, and Netflix is another network that airs it.

The Great British Bake Off is another content that 4VR will be providing, and it features a 360-degree version of the show.

The app is free to download from the Oculus Store.
