HP is set to launch a new version of its Reverb G2 PC VR headset. The headset was launched almost a year ago, and the VR headset gave some tough competition to other giants in the field, namely Quest 2 and Valve Index. As the case may be with the original Reverb G2 PC VR headset, there were a few issues with the headset, and HP is looking to address and solve some of them in the upcoming new version of the headset.
The new updated G2 headset model will have a few hardware and software updates. In a press release, HP noted, “when it comes to controller tracking, good isn’t good enough”, and that the company has improved the headset’s tracking ability that has increased the tracking volume “by 30% compared to our original headset and resolving blind spots above and below the waist.” As mentioned in the press release, the new changes will also be applicable to the Reverb G3 Omnicept Edition.
However, how exactly the change has been implemented is not clear yet as the press release does not mention its mechanisms. Some experts in this field think that it might have been due to a physical hardware adjustment to the tracking camera. This has not been confirmed officially.
HP officially did announce that the physical changes made to the headset are an “all-new facemask design that enables users to adjust their eye relief distance to ensure they can better dial into their visual ‘sweet spot’.” Among the physical changes added to the new headset is a spacer which can be removed if the user chooses to do so. The removable spacer was not available on the previous version of the Reverb G2 PC VR headset. The inclusion of the spacer makes the eye relief distance 15mm, and without it, the distance cuts down to 9mm.
