According to Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Tesla’s Model Y, which is based on model 3, will come in 2019 or 2020.  During Tesla’s earnings call Wednesday, Musk said that the Model used substantial carry over from Model 3 to bring it to market faster.” Elon Musk already commented on Model Y in March that the Model Y production line would be “nothing close to anything.”

The CEO also said in March that the new production line would allow Tesla to push away from the 12-volt electrical system used in most cars, which, according to Musk, is “wrong for everything.” On Wednesday, Musk verified that this is still projected. Musk said that his executive team “reeled him back from the cliffs of insanity,” which doesn’t tell us much. He also talked about the importance of the SUV in the current market and mentioned that launching the model Y sooner would be good for sales. Talking about the new production line, Elon Musk said the company would continue doing this “crazy thing” in the future, but likely after the Model Y hits the market.  Tesla shared the image of the Model Y in June. It shows the only outline of the car but has no side mirrors. The model Y might have the Falcon Wing doors previously seen on model X.

Nothing else is known about the car in terms of specs.
