The world’s largest EV manufacturer, Tesla, has announced today that it has produced 2 million electric vehicles at its Giga Shanghai factory. With this, the factory is said to be the most productive EV factory.
The Giga Shanghai factory started operations in December 2019 after breaking ground in December 2018. Vehicles like the popular Model 3 and Model Y are made at the factory.
Just 13 months later, the automaker declared that Shanghai’s Gigafactory had now manufactured 2 million electric cars. At the factory, Tesla built its first million electric vehicles in 33 months, but the second million were built in just 13 months.
According to Song Gang, senior director of manufacturing at the Tesla Gigafactory Shanghai, the factory’s location in Shanghai’s pilot free trade zone contributes to Tesla’s outstanding production ramp there:
“The increase in Tesla’s production speed is inseparable from the superior business environment in Shanghai, especially the Lin-gang special area of the Shanghai pilot free trade zone.”
Since the commencement of production at the factory, the brand has affirmed its commitment to the EV industry. In 2021, Elon Musk, the CEO, divulged that Gigafactory Shanghai has now surpassed Fremont Factory in production capacity, and Tesla has made the Chinese factory its new main export hub.
Meanwhile, in just August of last year, the EV giant announced that the factory had built one million cars. It quickly surpassed all other electric vehicle factories in size and productivity after only two years of manufacturing.
