Respect and accountability are worth for every human and so the riders who do not abide by this minimum behavior while their ride will be banned from the app, Uber. Uber said on Wednesday that it would start banning riders with low ratings, a significant change to the company’s previous policies.

Respect is a two-way street, and so is accountability. Drivers have long been expected to meet a minimum rating threshold, which can vary from city to city. While we expect only a small number of riders to be impacted by ratings-based deactivations ultimately, it’s the right thing to do – Uber

For years, it was always the passengers who rated the drivers on a star system, ultimately allowing customers to influence whether drivers can stay behind the wheel. Internal charts from 2014 published by Business Insider showed that drivers with ratings of 4.6 or below were at risk for the boot.

Before anyone is banned, riders at risk of deactivation will get several notifications and opportunities to improve their score. Uber will send alerts with tips to boost Uber rating “such as encouraging polite behavior, avoiding leaving trash in the vehicle, and avoiding requests for drivers to exceed the speed limit,” according to the blog post.

Though drivers could rate passengers, there was no equivalency in consequences. But now Uber’s drivers will have a greater say about the behavior of passengers.
