Artificial Intelligence(AI) in Education has been a thing since the uptick of AI in the 1980s. Education and AI seem to be made for each other in many ways. We utilize education as a means to develop minds that are capable of expanding the knowledge pool, while AI offers tools for building a more detailed and accurate picture of how the human mind functions.

The dynamic and digital nature of AI Education also provides opportunities for student engagement that can’t be found in a typical four-walled fixed environment of classrooms or in out-dated textbooks. In a synergistic fashion, each of them has the potential to drive the other forward and speed up the creation of innovative technologies and the discovery of new frontiers of learning.

In this post, I will discuss the ways in which artificial intelligence is being applied in education. While these are in use in some form today, many people feel that they are in a relatively primitive stage with reference to envisioned long-term objectives. Out of these, ITS (Intelligent Tutoring Systems) seems to have made high progress over the past 20 years, as one of the original concepts for AI applications in education. The below-mentioned factors have the potential to help shape the next generation of more responsive teaching and personalized learning.

AI Applications in Education

Smart Content

Smart content incorporates customizable learning interfaces and digitized study guides for post-secondary and elementary students. For instance, the smart study guides are explaining the content of the textbook via true-false questions, practice tests, chapter summaries, and flashcards. Smart digital content platforms provide comprehensive assessments, real-time feedback, practice exercises, and interactive content.

AI in Education

The significance of smart platforms lies in allowing educators to design customizable curriculums and content that work on various devices. These platforms integrate well with video conferencing, gamification techniques, simulation systems, and self-assessments.

Problem Identification and Solving

Many professors and teachers have students who learn at different paces and have different progress rates. Therefore, it is highly challenging to locate and manage their particular educational needs.

The solutions of AI complement in-class teaching as they don’t utilize the traditional one-size-fits-all approach. For instance, the AI algorithms can analyze the data in order to identify learning gaps, provide insights and establish patterns. Some educational platforms and institutions utilize AI solutions to analyze years of student performance data as well as teacher interaction to detect trends and avoid problems.

Crowd-Sourced Tutoring

Crowdsourcing is utilized mostly for funding drives and outsourcing workers, but it is also being utilized to match an appropriate tutor with the student. Online service website makes use of machine learning and AI to match singles together, so they can be used naturally to match students and tutors together. Educational social networks help lakhs of students collaborate and support each other across the nation and the globe. Complex machine learning algorithms are utilized by these networks to help moderators offer individualized services to students, minimize low-quantity content and filter spam. These social media platforms also make friend suggestions depending on the help required and areas of interest.

Intelligent Tutoring Systems(ITS)

In the 1970s, one of the highly influential educational psychologists, Benjamin Bloom, published his mastery learning principles. His research demonstrated the serious need for classroom instruction and individualized tutoring. Developing a one-on-one tutoring system that provides opportunities for corrected practice, personalized curriculum, targeted feedback and enrichment activities has always been a goal of AI programmers.

At present, ITS may utilize things such as advanced technologies and cognitive science to offer personalized tutoring and real-time feedback. Virtual tutoring systems cannot replace a human, but they provide differentiated learning, convenience and flexibility.

Virtual Facilitators and Learning Environments

Usually, distance education platforms in colleges depend on asynchronous courses and are facilitated by instructors but are not conducted in real-time. While only some educators need virtual instructors to replace human educators, AI is being utilized to develop virtual facilitators and digital guides for use in educational environments.

For instance, USC(The University of Southern California) has pioneered smart virtual environments and applications that utilize AI, 3-D gaming, and animation to generate authentic avatar characters and realistic social interactions. The CVIT(Captivating Instruction for Training) of USC blends virtual technologies with live classroom technologies for remote training programs that provide augmented reality and intelligent tutoring.

Thus, Artificial Intelligence systems and solutions offer supplemental support and personalized experiences to administrators, students, and teachers. With newer implementations being put into action, AI’s future seems bright in the education sector.
