Sugar, the working title for a potential TV series starring Colin Farrell, has reportedly been won by Apple TV+ and Netflix in a heated auction. Mark Protosevich, whose feature work includes Thor and I Am Legend, designed it.
Reports show that Apple and Netflix were the only bidders on the bundle. The premise is being kept under wraps, but it’s a contemporary spin on the private detective story set in Los Angeles.
Farrell and Protosevich, as well as Simon Kinberg and Audrey Chon of Genre Films and Scott Greenberg, are executive producers of the drama.
Kinberg just landed a second season renewal for the Apple TV sci-fi series Invasion, which he co-created, writes, and EPs with David Weil.
Apple Original Films was nominated for six Critics Choice Film Awards in 2021, which was announced late yesterday. Six Critics Choice Film Award nominations were given to Apple Original Films “CODA” and “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” including a Best Picture award for “CODA.”
The film award nominations come after Apple TV+ received nine Critics Choice TV Award nominations across six programs this week, bringing the total number of Critics Choice Award nominations for Apple Original series and films in 2021 to 15. The winners will be announced at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles on Sunday, January 9, 2022.
The Critics Choice Association has nominated the Sundance Grand Jury Prize-winning Apple Original Film “CODA” for a Best Picture Award and acting nominations for performers Emilia Jones and Troy Kotsur, following its global premiere earlier this year. Sian Heder, the writer/director, was also nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay.
“The Tragedy of Macbeth,” based on William Shakespeare’s play and written for the screen and directed by Joel Coen, received two Critics Choice Film Award nominations, including Best Actor for Denzel Washington and Best Cinematography for Bruno Delbonnel, and will premiere in select theaters on December 25, 2021, and globally on Apple TV+ on Friday, January 14, 2022.
Apple TV+ garnered a total of 15 nominations for the 27th Annual Critics Choice Awards in the categories of television and film.
