Two of the biggest buzz terms from the last few years have been artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning. They often, sometimes incorrectly, get used interchangeably. This is understandable given how linked they are as concepts. That being said both technologies are being woven into our daily life to an extent some users may find hard to believe.

For some, the mobile phone they have in their pocket or on their work desk is becoming one of the main focal points for how we interact with AI technology.

Revolutionary potential

As is the case with futurists, their gaze is permanently looking into the future. Several great articles about AI’s potential to revolutionize mobile phone technology have been written.

Improved security, greater customization and user experience, improved voice recognition are all being hailed as such revolutionary uses for AI, and to some extent have already been incorporated into high-end mobile phones.

While the technology’s adoption is still in its infancy it is helping scientists gain a better appreciation for how to practically incorporate the technology in the consumers’ everyday life, as well as hurdles that need to be cleared to make future potential a reality.

One such issue is the computing power needed for AI applications. The increased computing power a CPU need has driven researchers to create low-power computer chips, that consume less in terms of power but exceed current computational boundaries.

Facial recognition

One of the areas where AI is being used to improve current technology is facial recognition. This is a constantly improving use of the technology and AI Face Recognition is looking to correct current limitations regarding the technology such as failing to recognize different racial groups accurately.

The technology has come under scrutiny for the potential to abuse user privacy rights; however, if correctly regulated the technology has a lot of benefits to offer such as improving accessibility to technology for the disabled.

Speech recognition

The beginnings of AI integration can be seen in how mobile phone producers are incorporating speech recognition applications that have changed how we interact with our mobile phones. What we have come to see as digital personal assistants respond to our voice queries and can deliver valuable information needed in the day-to-day running of our lives.

This facet of AI technology is only expected to improve by understanding the context of the query and in what mood the user delivered the query.

Cameras

The humble camera has already seen its functionality improved by AI technology. Some manufacturers have already supplemented their camera technology with AI recognizing and detecting shapes and people. Further, recommendations can be made to the user of when the best time is to take the photo.

Some manufacturers are already implementing how purchases can be made by the user by simply scanning a QR code using the onboard camera. Once scanned the user can be informed about the product, price, and available options.

Future expected improvements to onboard cameras will include better light detection, the ability to determine the time of day, and what is the subject matter all in an effort to improve the photo taken by the user.

Conclusion

We are seeing the adoption of AI technology across all economic and industrial sectors. It is in the technology we use every day, namely the mobile phone, that most people have access to AI technology that will come to inhabit more of their lives.
