Over the past year, OpenAI has captured the imagination of the tech world with its ChatGPT tool. This remarkable tool has garnered immense attention and acclaim, becoming a household name in the technology landscape. Building on this success, OpenAI launched its inaugural developer event to unveil a series of new AI models and tools, further solidifying its position in the AI industry.

During the event, OpenAI disclosed that over 100 million users now engage with ChatGPT weekly. Impressively, ChatGPT rapidly achieved the milestone of 100 million monthly users shortly after its launch. Moreover, over 2 million developers have been actively working with OpenAI’s API to develop innovative solutions. Now, let’s delve into the six most significant new AI models and tools unveiled at the event.

OpenAI’s New AI Models and Tools

1. GPT-4 Turbo

OpenAI introduced the GPT-4 Turbo, an enhanced version of the popular GPT-4 model. It offers two variants: one for text analysis and another for processing both text and images. The pricing is set at $0.01 per 1,000 input tokens and $0.03 per 1,000 output tokens for the text-only model. For image processing, it costs $0.00765 for a 1080 x 1080 pixel image. GPT-4 Turbo boasts an extended context window of 128,000 tokens, or roughly 100,000 words, a four-fold increase from GPT-4.

2. GPTs and GPT Store

OpenAI revealed plans to allow users to publish GPTs to a store, featuring creations from “verified builders.” Additionally, the company intends to incentivize the creators of popular GPTs. These example GPTs will be accessible to ChatGPT Plus and ChatGPT Enterprise customers.

Based on the live demonstration, it appears that OpenAI offers a conversational AI model called GPT Builder that enables users to construct personalized GPTs through the use of natural language. By giving GPT access to one or more APIs, users can define custom actions in addition to utilizing the built-in features. Custom actions enable GPTs to interface with the outside world or integrate external data, much like plug-ins do.

3. New Assistants API

Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO, introduced the Assistants API, a pivotal step in enabling developers to create AI agents within their applications. This flexible API facilitates the development of diverse applications, from coding assistants to AI-powered vacation planners.

Use cases for this extensible API include voice-activated DJs, coding assistants, AI-powered trip planners, natural language-based data analysis apps, smart visual canvases, and more. The Assistants API is based on the same set of instructions and tools – such as code interpreters, retrieval, and function calls – that underpin the new GPTs product.

4. DALL-E 3 API

OpenAI’s text-to-image model, DALL-E 3, is now accessible through an API, complete with built-in moderation tools. It supports image outputs ranging from 1024×1024 to 1792×1024 in different formats, priced at $0.04 per generated image.

5. Audio API

OpenAI launched the Audio API, a text-to-speech solution featuring six preset voices. It provides access to two generative AI models and is priced at $0.015 per 1,000 input characters.

6. Copyright Shield

And finally, in a groundbreaking move, OpenAI introduced the Copyright Shield program, aimed at safeguarding businesses that employ OpenAI’s products from copyright-related legal claims. OpenAI has pledged to cover legal fees for customers facing IP lawsuits pertaining to content created using their tools.

OpenAI’s first developer event showcased the company’s unwavering commitment to innovation and collaboration, heralding a new era in AI development. As these new models and tools are embraced by the global developer community, they have the potential to redefine AI applications across various domains.
