Sony announces its new ‘Spresense’ main and extension boards for IoT applications

Sony on today, May 14 has announced its two new products under the trademark Spresense. These are main and extension boards for IoT applications, able to operate on low-power and bearing smart-sensing processor.

The boards can be combined to build and develop different types of systems for diverse IoT applications and devices, ranging from drones to sensing cameras and more. Sony made the technological info of software and hardware of these boards publicly available via an open platform, inviting developers and taking a broad step ahead in the field of IoT. The information can be found on the Sony Spresense developer web pages.

The mainboard uses a multi-CPU structure that’s equipped with Sony’s GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) receiver and high-resolution audio codec. It possesses a hexa-CPU and multi-core configuration to facilitate the creations of high-performance and highly versatile applications.

On the other hand, the extension board features a microphone jack, headphone jack, and an SD card slot, and is designed to develop audio applications with audio recording and playback. Additionally featuring a connector, it can be used by combining with the main board. The connector can control the I/O voltage of the main board, enabling it to connect and use open-platform and general-purpose extension boards.

While these products will be sold online, some specific physical stores will as well have the availability, as said by Sony. These will be displayed at the Maker Faire Bay Area 2018 in San Mateo starting Friday, May 18; and at the Maker Faire Tokyo 2018 in Tokyo on August 4-5. Sales are starting on July 31.
