Samsung Electronics introduced 108 MP Samsung ISOCELL Bright HMX in collaboration with Xiaomi Corp. The manufacturing of this Samsung image sensor will begin later this month. Why is everyone excited about it? This new ISOCELL will be the first-ever mobile image sensor to exceed 100 million pixels. With the addition, Samsung will move up from 64 MP to 108 MP, similar to a high-end DSLR camera resolution.

The huge number of pixels will ensure that the image quality is maintained even in low lighting. With the 1/1.33 inch sized Samsung image sensor, the HMX will be able to absorb more lighting even in a poor quality light setting, resulting in high-end picture quality.

The Tetracell technology embedded in the sensor can act as big-pixel sensor producing 27 MP images. What is more, users do not have to set the ISO manually according to the light setting. Its Smart-ISO technology will automatically adjust its ISO for a better picture. If the setting light is dim, the Samsung 108 MP image sensor will automatically increase it to produce bright images, and vice versa. In terms of video recording, the Samsung ISOCELL Bright HMX can record at resolutions up to 6K 30-frames-per-second (fps).

For ISOCELL Bright HMX, Xiaomi and Samsung have worked closely together from the early conceptual stage to production that has resulted in a groundbreaking 108Mp image sensor. We are very pleased that picture resolutions previously available only in a few top-tier DSLR cameras can now be designed into smartphones. As we continue our partnership, we anticipate bringing not only new mobile camera experiences but also a platform through which our users can create unique content. – Lin Bin, the co-founder and president of Xiaomi

Striking the same chord, Yongin Park, the executive vice president of sensor business at Samsung Electronics, said, “Samsung is continuously pushing for innovations in pixel and logic technologies to engineer our ISOCELL image sensors to capture the world as close to how our eyes perceive them. Through close collaboration with Xiaomi, Samsung ISOCELL Bright HMX is the first mobile image sensor to pack over 100 million pixels and delivers unparalleled color reproduction and stunning detail with advanced Tetracell and ISOCELL Plus technology.”
