The Chinese multi-tech firm Huawei has been going through a quagmire region amid cumbersome US pressure. The company has now agreed to license some of its handsets technologies to its rival OPPO to recover from offshore floundering after its smartphone business was strongly collapsed by US trade sanctions that had cessation its accessibility to nuanced chips.

Huawei and Oppo, one of the notable manufacturers of smartphones, said on Friday that they had agreed to a “patent cross-licensing” deal covering technologies including 5G. The agreement comes in the wake of a tussle to make revenue from its patent tool. The financial terms of the agreement, which Huawei said is its most significant cross-licensing agreement with a Chinese company, haven’t yet been revealed.

Alan Fan, head of Huawei’s intellectual property department, did not like to broaden their view on the specific patents resolved in the deal. The partnership is “a win-win deal” for both companies as it demonstrates the recognition and respect for each other’s intellectual property (IP), Adler Feng, Oppo’s chief intellectual property officer, said in a statement.”

Huawei finishes the year with 20 new patent licensing deals in 2022, including past licensees such as Samsung Electronics, said Fan. Huawei is also considering talks with other Chinese and foreign companies about licensing patents, Fan said. Merely 350 million 5G smartphones and 15 million tied cars will benefit from Huawei’s patent licenses this year.
