The newly released Harry Potter video game has quickly become a hot topic in the gaming community. The Hogwarts Legacy sales numbers in the U.K. have surpassed those of The Elden Ring and it is now the all-time best-performing Harry Potter game.
GamesIndustry.biz reported that in its first week, Hogwarts Legacy sold 80% more units in the U.K. than Elden Ring. In terms of physical sales, it outperformed 2001’s Harry Potter by 64% higher and the Philosopher’s Stone second week by 2%, which was its most successful period in terms of sales because of the buzz around the movie. If we include digital sales, the total will be considerably greater.
Hogwarts Legacy not only broke the record for the biggest Harry Potter game launch, but it also smashed Elden Ring’s launch week sales in the UK. In terms of consoles, the PS5 outperformed Xbox Series X|S by 82% in Hogwarts Legacy sales, due to the fact that the digital figures are still unknown.
Prior to its release, Hogwarts Legacy was mired in controversy involving J.K. Rowling, the creator of the Harry Potter series, but the sales numbers clearly show that the game has had a strong start. Since its debut, Hogwarts Legacy has reached its highest-ever peak of over 850,000 concurrent gamers on Steam. Hogwarts Legacy’s digital sales have not yet been reported, therefore the current sales figure is solely based on the sale of physical copies.
Although Elden Ring, the acclaimed open-world RPG from the previous year, had a successful digital launch, we’ll need to wait for further data before drawing a definite conclusion. Nevertheless, given the popularity of the Harry Potter media brand, Hogwarts Legacy sales numbers surpassing the FromSoftware game is not entirely surprising.
We will have to wait to see if the statistics are simply rising as a result of the hype surrounding the game’s first week or if they will continue to rise to claim the top place on the list of the most popular games overall.
