The Mortal Kombat franchise has been sustained by Warner Bros. through numerous platform generations. But the creator may have unintentionally announced the newest game earlier than intended. The long-rumored Mortal Kombat 12 has finally been confirmed, and the release date is scheduled for later in 2023.
The studio has remained rather quiet on what its upcoming game will be for a while since the previous Mortal Kombat game came out in 2019. We haven’t had a new Mortal Kombat game in quite some time, not even one new fighting game from NetherRealm Studios. With the upcoming release of Mortal Kombat 12, 2023 will undoubtedly be a momentous year for fighting game fans. NetherRealm Studios is the developer of the Mortal Combat games, while Warner Bros. is the publisher.
Mortal Kombat 12 will be released in 2023
MK12 was confirmed during Warner Bros. Discovery’s earning call about the company’s gaming division (as discovered by IGN). Andrew Slabin, executive vice president of global investment strategy at Warner Bros. Discovery, made the announcement. The earning call confirmed that Mortal Kombat 12 is not only in development but it also has a slated release date in 2023.
Slabin stated, “There’s plenty more to come, including the much-awaited Mortal Kombat 12 and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, titles likewise slated for release this year with ambitious launch projections.
So for this year itself, Mortal Kombat 12 is indeed not Warner Bros. Games’ only significant release date scheduled for 2023; Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, a Batman: Arkham series offshoot, is also scheduled to debut in May.
The game’s release date has been scheduled for later this year, so an announcement or a gameplay reveal trailer should arrive soon. However, NetherRealm has not yet commented on this surprising development, but they will almost probably do so shortly.
Street Fighter 6 is another game in a similar genre that will be released this year in June; it will be interesting to see whether both games release at the same time or if MK12 comes out later.
