Intel has introduced its new product. the Intel Scalable I/O Virtualization or Intel Scalable IOV is the result of the company’s hardware-assisted approach to bringing a solution for I/O virtualization.
The technology provides scalability in sharing of I/O devices like network and storage controllers, GPUs, and hardware accelerators across containers and virtual machines. It is able to provide much more scalability at lower expenses than existing standard SR-IOV (Single Root I/O Virtualization). In the activity, it does not compromise its performance benefits, unlike SR-IOV.
Intel Scalable IOV also brings a new notion of composability. This enables the hardware to directly run frequent and performance-critical operations. At the same time, the software will be taking care of the complex control and complex operations.
This makes way for simpler hardware designs and helps in its way to address issues regarding direct device management, like live migration, memory-overcommitment, and generational compatibility.
Intel has also released an initial technical specification for its new product, and it is available on the developer website of the brand. Furthermore, it released an update to Intel Virtualization Technology that provides the platform support for the Scalable IOV, thus making the product advanced on the go.
Intel hopes that the Scalable IOV will suffice the increasing requirements in virtualization and containerization.
