Uber apparently found the replacement of its former CEO Travis Kalanick. Dara Khosrowshahi has been officially offered the post as new Uber CEO, according to various sources close to Uber. He is presently the CEO of Expedia.

Khosrowshahi is not highly under Uber’s radar, as compared to other candidates for the post. In fact, the concerned candidates Jeff Immelt (GE) and Meg Whitman (HP) have higher profiles. Therefore, it is a surprise that Khosrowshahi is considered to be the next Uber leader. Let’s find out more about him.

Growing up and Expedia

Born in Iran in 1969, Khosrowshahi became an immigrant to the U.S. at age of 9. He grew up in the state of New York with his mother and two brothers. He graduated from Browns University with an electrical engineering degree. After that in 1991, he joined Allen and Co as an analyst. Then, he joined IAC (the-then USA Networks).

In 2001, IAC acquired a majority stake in Expedia, which was a subsidiary of Microsoft at that time. The valuation was around $2 billion. Khosrowshahi became the leader of Expedia in 2005 when the company parted ways with IAC.

Expedia under Khosrowshahi went on to become a $23 billion giant with their worldwide presence. While the company’s revenue was $2.1 billion in 2005, it counted to $8.2 billion in 2016. This development saw Khosrowshahi earn about $95 million as the CEO, majorly from stock incentives. In fact, two years ago, this made him the highest paid CEO in S&P 500.

Expedia has gone through numerous investments and acquisitions to expand its global presence. Considering that, the company, much like Uber, exited the Chinese market because of aggressive local competitors. In 2016, Khosrowshahi said that Expedia did alright in China as far as business and revenue are concerned. Still, Expedia is active in Chinese markets through its targets on the outbound Chinese travelers. But, the company does not focus on the domestic market, as confirmed by Khosrowshahi. Similarly, last year, Uber sold its Chinese business to a local rival Didi.

New Uber CEO in politics

As long as the profile of Khosrowshahi is concerned, he is pretty active in politics as well. A recent topic gradually gaining attention in the tech industry involves the initiatives of the U.S. President Trump. Khosrowshahi is a notable vocal opposition in this regard. He actively criticized the travel ban implement on certain Muslim-majority countries, including Iran. Expedia, with Amazon and Microsoft, is one of the first tech companies supporting unconstitutional immigration.

Khosrowshahi is quite active on Twitter given that he is a public company CEO. He has been standing by and encouraging people to travel right after Trump took over the office. On the whole, he is quite loud on the online platform criticizing Trump’s reactions to incidents like Charlottesville violence. Consequently, he holds a more evolved public position as compared to the same of Kalanick that has deteriorated gradually.

Relationship with Google

Apart from politics, both Uber and Khosrowshahi have another common ground, Google. In other words, Google is a common enemy to both. Presently, Uber is in the war against Google regarding the theft of self-driving car technology. This October will see the issue go to court.

On the other hand, Khosrowshahi, the to-be new Uber CEO, has had issues with Google since a long time. In fact, the search giant has been a threat to Expedia over the years regarding many issues.

Summing Up

There is much to consider before Khosrowshahi’s acceptance of Uber’s job offer. So far, it looks like to be inclined towards having an optimistic result. It is, in fact, one of the hottest topics to be discussed online presently. Follow this space to know more on the development of this aspect.
