The long-anticipated Resident Evil 4 fan-made HD Mod, which took eight years to develop, has now been officially unveiled.
Cris Morales and Albert Martin started the development of the Resident Evil 4 HD Project 1.0 eight years ago, and it replaces almost all of the game’s textures with new high-res textures and numerous new 3D models. Lamps, candelabra, and doors are examples of flat things.
What makes the Resident Evil 4 HD Project so astounding is that the crew traveled to many of the real-world areas where Capcom originally acquired materials for the game, such as Wales and Spain, to capture images that would aid in providing the highest resolution assets possible. As a result, the mod may now be “displayed in resolutions up to 16 times that of the original game.”
Cris and Albert have also improved upon the original game by transforming flat objects into 3D models—something that was simply not possible on older hardware—as well as correcting texture mapping and 3D modeling issues that have arisen as the game has progressed from SD to HD displays over the years. They’ve even managed to bring the in-game sequences up to date using a combination of AI upscaling and complete re-creation.
The Resident Evil 4 HD Project mod is available for download from the official website, although it should be noted that the downloads do not include a copy of Resident Evil 4.
Instead, it gives files for improving the game’s Steam port, which you must acquire and download before you can see what the mod has to offer. Fortunately, it’s currently on sale for $5, so now is as good a time as any to check out this HD mod and see what the team has accomplished.
