Samsung had started its dive into foldable panel sometime last year, mostly to manufacture its foldable smartphone. After that venture proved to be successful, the display R&D and manufacturing department of Samsung announced that its third-generation foldable OLED panel has successfully been through the commercialization process.

The latest from Samsung has the smallest radius of curvature (Rx1.4) in the industry. The first device to make use of the panel is Samsung’s very own Galaxy Z Fold 2 5G folding screen smartphone.

The smaller radius of curvature will help the screen to fold more fully along the crease, and thereby, the gap between the two screens when fold would decrease. In terms of its details, Samsung Display’s third-generation 1.4R foldable OLED panel features a screen of 7.6-inches with 2208 x 1768 pixels. Moreover, this particular model will be sturdier than the last ones.

Samsung apparently had obtained a certification from Bureau Veritas stating that the screen can withstand 200,000 opening and closing times. The certification ensures that for this model of foldable screens, the South Korean tech giant had used stronger and durable materials, and the protection of ultra-thin glass is not absent.

The reduction of the panel folding gap also has its positive sides. The narrower gap will make sure that the damage done to the screen by foreign matter intrusion could be minimized by a significant amount. In addition, the panel provides the industry’s lowest blue emission level (only 6.5%) to ensure a more comfortable viewing experience.

The company stated, “In order to minimize folding stress, Samsung Display has introduced a series of technical optimizations in terms of materials, panel design, module assembly, etc. so that the multilayer structure can act as a cushion when the panel is folded.” As per their statement, the technical requirements for any folding panel are higher than any outward-facing folding screen devices used on various computing products.
