Since the release of the DJI Mini 2 drone back in November 2020, users have been highly anticipated for the next drone. In a most recent development, DJI leakers have revealed a list of potential specs for the next drone, DJI Mini 3.

@DealsDrone shared a reportedly leaked DJI roadmap in December, which included the Mini 3, RS3, Inspire 3, and Pocket 3. While there have been a few new DJI product rumors since then, @JasperEllens may have discovered the first glimpse of the Mini 3 Pro.

Despite the fact that such an image may be easily faked, Ellens does not believe it has been put together. Instead, he came to the conclusion that DJI has updated its Mini drone for the third generation.

According to the recent leaks, the possible specifications of the upcoming DJI Mini 3 drone includes A 1/1.3-inch CMOS sensorF1.7 large aperture, A gimbal tilted at a large angle allowing you to shoot upwards, A camera supporting vertical mode, 3-directional obstacle avoidance, ActiveTrack Mode, O3 transmission system and A new remote controller with a built-in screen.

In comparison, the Mini 2 has a 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor that produces 12MP still images. It doesn’t have any obstacle avoidance sensors and employs the less advanced O2 transmission system.

The sub-250-gram model also lacks native subject tracking. Third-party flight apps like Litchi have begun to offer tracking and “follow me” capabilities to Mini 2 users, thanks to the recent release of the Mini 2 SDK.

In any event, the Mini 2 has been in need of an update for quite some time. According to previous rumors, the redesigned drone will have a new aerodynamic design with a carbon-fiber body.

Downward slanted arms, larger propellers, and forward, backward, and downward obstacle avoidance sensors are also expected. With the addition of a battery extension, the maximum flight time is likely to improve as well. And there’s little doubt that the drone camera will improve.

It’s worth noting that DJI now has some real competition in the sub-250-gram space, thanks to the recent introduction of Autel Nano and Nano+.

However, the Nano’s base package costs at least $200 more than the Mini 2, giving DJI a considerable advantage in a price-conscious market. And, in order to maintain that advantage, the new and improved Mini 3 will need to be reasonably priced.

At the moment, Ellens has only given a single shot of what appears to be a DJI Smart Controller. At this time, the Mini 3 Pro’s specifications are unknown, thus it’s unclear how it will differ from the anticipated Mini 3. DJI is expected to announce the Mini 3 series in April this year.
